Human Rights 101 with Lorraine Finlay
September 10 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm AWST
We are excited to have long time Mannkal friend Lorraine Finlay, the Human Rights Commissioner of Australia, deliver a special seminar to our Scholars. Lorraine will present on the origin of Human Rights, why we have them, why we respect them and whether any groups need special rights.
Nelson Mandela famously said that ‘to deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity’. But what do we really mean when we talk about human rights? Where do they come from? How are they be protected? What are some of the current challenges? Join Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner, Lorraine Finlay, for an introduction to human rights in Australia and a discussion about why a commitment to individual human rights is essential to advancing freedom and prosperity.
Lorraine Finlay is an honoured guest of Mannkal. After receiving her joint Master Degree in Law from NUS and NYU, she became an Associate of the High Court Justice the Honourable J.D Heydon. Following this, Lorraine was a State Prosecutor at the Western Australian Department of Public Prosecutions. Lorraine was a Law Lecturer at Murdoch University before her appointment as the Human Rights Commissioner. We are delighted to have her join us for our student seminar.
